Why is your name changing from Weaver Popcorn to Weaver Popcorn Hybrids?

Weaver Popcorn has had a breeding program and seed production division for over 40 years but, as of 2019, these two parts of Weaver Popcorn are becoming Weaver Popcorn Hybrids (WPH), an independent seed company. WPH will continue to be family owned, run by the values of founder Reverend Ira E. Weaver, who is remembered for the motto he lived by, "No sale is complete if the customer isn't satisfied."

I've never been able to grow Weaver Popcorn seed in the past, so is this new?

With the establishment of WPH, we are, for the first time, making our top performing hybrid seed available to others for sale in domestic and international markets. Where we previously only used our seed internally as part of Weaver Popcorn, the autonomy of WPH allows us to sell seed to everyone, creating a new opportunity to increase popcorn productivity worldwide.

What is hybrid seed?

Hybrid seed is what farmers put in the ground to grow popcorn plants that produce popcorn grain. Popcorn grain is the finished product that you eat. Although theoretically hybrid popcorn seed will pop and you can eat it if untreated, the quality of the grain produced by the hybrid is more desirable than the seed you would place in the ground.

Why should I grow popcorn as a hybrid?

Hybrid Vigor is a phenomenon common in corn, including popcorn, where the performance of the hybrid plant is much higher than either of the parent lines. Popcorn is almost always grown as a hybrid because the farmer can produce twice as much popcorn without sacrificing any quality in the finished product. This allows the farmer to make a living, the consumer to purchase a product at a reasonable price, and for everyone to eat a high-quality flake.

What is different about your hybrids?

Our hybrids come from unique genetics, selected on for decades to produce the highest popping, greatest yielding hybrids with superior eating quality. Our hybrids produce the largest kernels on the market, a unique trait that is favorable to many manufacturers and end users. Our hybrids also have great wide-area adaptation, allowing for you to grow a consistent product over the years and at all your growing locations.

I haven't grown Weaver Popcorn Hybrids before, so how do I know I'm getting a good product?

All of our hybrids are dent-sterile, non-GMO, and tested for purity by a third party to ensure we not only meet, but exceed every industry standard. Our seed production division uses only the strictest standards for quality, from the field all the way to the bag, and invites a third party auditor to test and certify this quality. We will continually evaluate our hybrids in new growing regions not previously used by Weaver Popcorn to ensure you have the best hybrid for your area before increasing your use of WPH.

Do you ever release new hybrids?

Thousands of new hybrids are created each year. These hybrids are grown over multiple years and in many environments throughout the world to rigorously evaluate them for yield, quality, adaptability, and other favorable characteristics to make sure we only release the best performing hybrids. We usually release 1-2 new hybrids each year to be sold in commercial production.
